Try something new

Getting or feeling stuck,

something we all experience now and again,

can affect not only your emotions,

but your creativity.

Here's one way that I cope with this:

Getting out of my comfort zone.

This forces you to adapt to a new environment,

and when you do this,

you promote personal growth,

which is a great way to prove to yourself

that you are moving in a positive direction

and you should keep that momentum.

My mind is naturally less inclined to spontaneity,

but I still try to challenge its settings,

and rewrite some of the code,

and it benefits me

each time.

As an artist, Reader

there are countless moments of disappointment we face,

like the slim odds of funding success for example,

or 'making it' (whatever that means),

which contribute to 'stuckness',

and so you have to,

metaphorically,

bulletproof your mind

in order to deal with those forces.

Impromptu activities or challenges train your mind

to expect and embrace the unexpected,

and can thus help you bounce back from seeming defeat.

My brief hiking experience

has been a prime personal example of this,

as I navigated different terrain and pushed myself

physically and mentally to make progress,

that has then given me newfound self-belief,

and a sense of confidence to overcome obstacles.

So,

if you find yourself feeling stuck,

or as if your growth has stagnated,

try something new and challenging,

and force yourself to prove those doubts wrong.

I'm currently assembling a set list and it's going smoothly so far.

I will be sharing a wide variety of original poems on the night and it would be great to have you at the event if time permits.

Entry details below.

'Aim for the stars and if you fall you land on the clouds' - Kanye West on 'Still Dreaming' by Nas (2006) Your potential is limitless. Yesterday, I performed at my headline gig at The Heath Bookshop, and I managed to craft and deliver a successful set, much longer than any set I'd done prior, yet it felt natural. I realised that our capabilities supersede what we originally thought possible. If I never had this headline opportunity, I don't know if I'd have put on an hour-long show of my own...

In a world where art is under threat from AI slop, what can you do to stop it replacing you? AI quashes free-thinking, and as a result, our creative instincts. Whether it is your corporate Co-Pilot AI that does all your work emails, your casual chats with ChatGPT about life and relationships, using AI for heavy lifting in work tasks, or whatever it may be, it all adds up. Now there's a difference between misusing AI and optimising workflow with AI. AI isn't the bad guy per se, it's a tool...

The pursuit of creating art can get lost in the whirlwind of life, where many suppress their creative passions for good. Society sees art as secondary because the economy doesn't support it like other pursuits and professions. So what do we do? Create anyway, without any expectations, except creative fulfilment, and understanding just how important such fulfilment is in our daily lives. This may require adjusting your schedule to fit in this precious activity, or try to form a passion for it,...
